Competing Agendas

Competition is good and makes everyone better- – – right?  Take a look at these competing agendas.

The Board of Directors has an agenda.

Management has an agenda.

But that’s not all.

The fundraiser has an agenda.

Program staff has an agenda.

The finance staff has an agenda.

Even the volunteers have an agenda.

Sure, agendas are expected. But do competing agendas make an organization better? Only if the agendas are aligned to produce the same desired outcomes. Otherwise, you have a directionless entity with multiple factions trying to meet different, often self-serving goals. This can result in wasted resources and poor results: not exactly what a prospective funder is looking for!

Identify your agendas and be sure they compliment each other. Remember, you don’t want them working against each other.
